Bar measurement

I have a '82 s10 std cab long bed. Fuel cell in stead of std tank. I need to know how to measure for the link bars. I will be using a SD 4 sq. tube 4 link with the bags on the bars. Is there a certain range the bar length should be? Is there a "too long" or "too short"?
